چکیده

Much crosslinguistic research exists on the production and perception of voice onset time (VOT). However, most research on the perception of VOT uses synthetic stimuli instead of natural speech stimuli. Effects of synthetic speech on the perception of VOT are not known, but more research needs to be done to see if there are differences between perception using synthetic speech and perception using natural speech. This pilot study uses natural speech to investigate perception of Japanese VOT by Japanese listeners. Results clearly show that not just VOT, but other phonetic factors too must be responsible for differences in perception of the voicedvoiceless distinction in Japanese word-initial stop consonants.

Acoustic Analysis of Korean L2 Learners in the Acquisition of English and Japanese Stop Voicing Contrasts

The present study examines phonetic characteristics of Korean L2 learners in their acquisition of English and Japanese stop voicing contrasts. Voice onset time (VOT) was measured on their Korean, English and Japanese utterances, and it was found that VOT is functional in distinguishing a three-way contrast of Korean stops, and that Korean L2 learners use their tense, unaspirated stops for voice...

Indeed, exposition to bimodal distributions leads to an improvement of phoneme di...

Dissociable Levels of Speech Processing in Second Language Perception

It is generally accepted that there are at least two levels of speech processing: a level that processes categorical (and possibly indexical) acoustic information, and a level that processes abstract information for phonemic/lexical contrasts. However, little is known about how these levels may interact to impede or facilitate the perception of non-native speech contrasts. Our study evaluates w...

Perception of voicing in the absence of native voicing experience

50 years of speech perception research provide a rich literature on crossand second language (L2) perception of stop consonant contrasts such as /p b/, /t d/, and /k g/ which differ systematically in the relative timing of oral stop release and the onset of vocal fold vibration (voice onset time: VOT). This research has focused primarily on two observations: 1) that nonnative listeners automati...

Perception of sine-wave analogs of voice onset time stimuli.

It has been argued that perception of stop consonant voicing contrasts is based on auditory mechanisms responsible for the resolution of temporal order. As one source of evidence, category boundaries for nonspeech stimuli whose components vary in relative onset time are reasonably close to the labeling boundary for a labial stop voiced-voiceless continuum. However, voicing boundaries change con...
